Deterministic Laws and Epistemic Chances

چکیده

In this paper, a concept of chance is introduced that is compatible with deterministic physical laws, yet does justice to our use of chance-talk in connection with typical games of chance, and in classical statistical mechanics. We take our cue from what Poincaré called “the method of arbitrary functions,” and elaborate upon a suggestion made by Savage in connection with this. Comparison is made between this notion of chance, and David Lewis’ conception. 1 Probability, Chance, and Credence: a brief

Deterministic Chance

I argue that there are non-trivial objective chances (that is, objective chances other than 0 and 1) even in deterministic worlds. The argument is straightforward. I observe that there are probabilistic special scientific laws even in deterministic worlds. These laws project nontrivial probabilities for the events that they concern. And these probabilities play the chance role and so should be ...

Laws Are Persistent Inductive Schemes

The characteristic difference between laws and accidental generalizations lies in our epistemic or inductive attitude towards them. This idea has taken various forms and dominated the discussion about lawlikeness in the last decades. Hence, ranking theory with its resources of formalizing defeasible reasoning or inductive schemes seems ideally suited to explicate the idea in a formal way. This ...

Causal Laws Are Objectifications of Inductive Schemes*

And this paper is an attempt to say precisely how, thus addressing a philosophical problem which is commonly taken to be a serious one. It does so, however, in quite an idiosyncratic way. It is based on the account of inductive schemes I have given in (1988) and (1990a) and on the conception of causation I have presented in (1980), (1983), and (1990b), and it intends to fill one of many gaps wh...

Deterministic Chance?

Can there be deterministic chance? That is, can there be objective chance values other than 0 or 1, in a deterministic world? I will argue that the answer is no. In a deterministic world, the only function that can play the role of chance is one that outputs just 0s and 1s. The role of chance involves connections from chance to credence, possibility, time, intrinsicness, lawhood, and causation....

Chance, Credence and Circles

This is a discussion of Richard Pettigrew’s Accuracy and the Laws of Credence. I target Pettigrew’s application of the accuracy framework to derive chance-credence principles. My principal contention is that Pettigrew’s preferred version of the argument might, in one sense, be circular. To support this (but also as an objection in its own right), I argue that Pettigrew’s premises have content t...
